The Challenge
P&D was commissioned to install, terminate, and test a fibre optic network within the eastbound and westbound bores of the Limehouse Link Tunnels as part of a critical fire alarm system upgrade.
Delivering works inside a live road tunnel environment introduced a number of operational and safety challenges, including restricted access windows, strict compliance requirements, and the need to work within confined spaces alongside existing tunnel infrastructure. The installation also needed to meet the high reliability standards expected of life safety systems, where performance and resilience are paramount.
The Solution
P&D deployed specialist fibre engineers to install, terminate, and fully test the fibre optic backbone for the fire alarm system.
The solution ensured fast, secure communication between fire detection components across both tunnel bores.
Delivery & Execution
Works were carefully planned and phased to align with operational constraints and minimise disruption to tunnel users. A safety-led approach, combined with rigorous testing and stakeholder coordination, ensured efficient and compliant delivery.
The Outcome
The project delivered a robust and fully certified fibre network that enhances the performance and reliability of the tunnel’s fire alarm system. The installation was completed safely, on programme, and with minimal impact on live tunnel operations.
Why P&D?
This project highlights P&D’s expertise in delivering fibre infrastructure for critical life safety systems in complex, live environments. Their structured, safety-first approach ensures dependable performance in high-risk infrastructure settings.
